About TMS for Depression
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment for Major Depressive Disorder. Rather than working through the bloodstream like a medication, TMS uses precisely targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate the region of the brain most closely linked to mood regulation — the same region that tends to be underactive in depression. No anesthesia, sedation, or recovery time is required.
Who Is TMS for Depression Right For?
TMS is typically considered for adults with depression who have tried one or more antidepressant medications without adequate relief, who have experienced side effects that made medication difficult to continue, or who are looking for a treatment approach that works differently than medication. It is often used alongside psychotherapy rather than in place of it. Studies have shown response and remission rates between 60-90% for appropriate candidates. During your consultation, your provider will review your history and determine whether TMS is a good fit for your specific situation.
What Should I Expect?
Treatment begins with a mapping session, where your provider identifies the precise location and energy level for your individual treatment. During each session, you'll recline in a comfortable chair while a treatment coil rests lightly against your head. You may hear a clicking or tapping sound and feel a tapping sensation on your scalp. Most patients read, listen to something, or simply relax during the appointment. A full course is typically five sessions a week for about six weeks, though your provider will tailor the schedule to your needs.
