TMS Therapy for OCD

FDA-cleared magnetic stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder that hasn't fully responded to medication or therapy alone.

About TMS for OCD

Since 2018, TMS has held FDA clearance specifically for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, using a protocol distinct from the one used for depression. Rather than working through medication, TMS uses targeted magnetic pulses aimed at the brain circuitry involved in the intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that define OCD. It is non-invasive, requires no anesthesia, and involves no systemic side effects the way medications can.

OCD sessions typically run under 20 minutes, after which patients are able to drive and return to their normal day.

Who Is TMS for OCD Right For?

TMS for OCD is generally considered for adults whose obsessions and compulsions have not responded adequately to standard first-line treatments — typically SSRIs and exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy. It's often used alongside ongoing therapy rather than as a replacement for it. Your provider will review your OCD history, prior treatments, and severity to determine candidacy during your evaluation.

What Should I Expect?

As with depression protocols, treatment starts with a mapping session to calibrate your individual settings. During OCD-protocol TMS, a provocation task (briefly focusing on an OCD trigger) is sometimes incorporated immediately before stimulation, which is a distinguishing feature of the OCD-specific protocol. Sessions are typically administered five days a week over about six weeks. Most patients resume normal activities immediately afterward, including driving.
