TRICARE Coverage for TMS and Spravato®
For military families, mental health coverage is often just as complicated as everything else that comes with military life. A Permanent Change of Station, a Guard or Reserve activation, or a spouse's deployment can all reshape what your TRICARE benefits cover and where. If you're exploring an advanced treatment like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) or Spravato® (esketamine) nasal spray, this page walks through how TRICARE East — administered by Humana Military — generally handles coverage for both.
Led Life Psychiatry is based in Ellicott City, Maryland, within the TRICARE East region. We work directly with Humana Military on prior authorization and can help you gather what's needed before your first appointment.
Military life asks a lot of service members and their families — frequent moves, deployments, and long stretches of uncertainty can all take a toll on mental health. Depression is common within the military community, and when it doesn't respond to first-line treatments like psychotherapy and medication, options like TMS and Spravato® can offer a path forward. Asking for that kind of help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

TMS and TRICARE
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. Because it works locally rather than throughout the whole body, many patients tolerate it without the systemic side effects associated with antidepressant medications.
Does TRICARE Cover TMS?
Yes. TRICARE generally covers TMS for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) once specific medical-necessity criteria are met.
TRICARE typically requires a diagnosis of major depressive disorder that hasn't improved after two or more antidepressant trials — different medications, taken at an adequate dose for an adequate length of time — or a documented intolerance to those medications. Coverage is generally available to patients 18 and older; some regions have extended eligibility to adolescents in select circumstances, so it's worth confirming your specific policy.
TRICARE requires prior authorization before TMS treatment can begin. Your provider submits documentation — diagnosis, prior medication trials, and clinical justification — to Humana Military for review. We handle this paperwork directly rather than leaving it to you to coordinate.
Choosing an in-network TRICARE East provider keeps your out-of-pocket cost as low as possible. Led Life Psychiatry provides TMS at our Ellicott City, Maryland location.
If a Guard or Reserve family member is activated, coverage rules can shift depending on the length and type of orders. Active-duty families generally need a referral and prior authorization from their Primary Care Manager (PCM) for specialist care like TMS — it's worth re-checking your benefits any time your status changes.
What you pay out of pocket depends on your specific TRICARE plan — Prime, Select, and Reserve Select each have different cost-sharing rules. We can help you check your specific benefits before treatment starts.
Spravato® and TRICARE
Spravato® (esketamine) is a nasal spray medication administered in a certified clinic to treat severe, treatment-resistant depression. It acts on the brain differently than traditional antidepressants and is known for working more quickly for some patients.
Does TRICARE Cover Spravato®?
Yes, under specific clinical guidelines.
Coverage is generally available to adults with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) or major depressive disorder with acute suicidal ideation, who have documented that at least two different antidepressant medications did not adequately relieve their symptoms.
As with TMS, TRICARE requires prior authorization before Spravato® treatment begins. Your provider submits your diagnosis, medication history, and clinic certification as part of that request.
Spravato® can only be administered at a clinic certified under the FDA's Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program, since patients must be monitored for at least two hours after each dose. TRICARE will not cover treatment at a clinic that isn't REMS-certified. Led Life LLC is a certified authorized SPRAVATO® provider.
TRICARE covers Spravato® only for its FDA-approved use — it does not cover off-label use, or compounded/custom-made esketamine or ketamine formulations.
Your specific cost depends on your TRICARE plan. Prior authorization and in-network care both help keep your out-of-pocket cost as low as possible.
